Our beliefs

In WCB, we believe that learning English could be fun. Our English teachers try to use different teaching methodologies to make English lessons interesting and interactive. Providing a rich English language environment to students outside the classroom is one of our priorities, for example, an English Café where students can enjoy a cup of drink and chat with English ambassadors and teachers. An English room where students can play board games and watch movies.

We believe it is important to provide students with maximum English exposure. We also encourage students to join different kinds of activities and competitions. Learning English not only helps their careers and study but also provide opportunities for enjoyment in their daily lives.

ENGLISH WEEK

In order to enhance students’ interests in learning English, various delightful and splendid activities were held during the English Week. To spice up the event the English Department teachers along with the English Club ambassadors exhibited opportunities to allow students to immerse themselves in a fun English environment. An array of activities was held which included, morning assemblies, presentations on festivals and pop culture. Additionally there were song dedications for teachers and peers. For the games section, students’ game stalls were set up and included entertaining games such as alphabetic fishing chain, table tennis vocabulary, scrabble and the inter-class quiz competition which helped boost the students’ confidence to chat freely. Overall it was enjoyed by a large number of enthusiastic participants.

INTER-CLASS ENGLISH QUIZ COMPETITION

ENGLISH CAFÉ

English Café is a social hang out space for students to meet and mingle by using authentic English in a sociable way to brush up their English skills. The English Café is run with pride by the English Café ambassadors, NET and English teachers every Monday. Students who drop by during the lunch time are treated as VIPs receiving gracious hospitality to create a memorable and lasting expression of feeling comfortable outdoors. The ambassadors greet, serve, entertain and provide opportunities of tasks that are done collaboratively e.g. solve riddles, play with the ambassadors monopoly, scrabble, meme cards, create stories with story cards, stacking tower games and also have conversational exchanges on a range of multiple topics e.g. leisure events, movies and sports etc. Students are served customised hot and cold drinks ranging from milk coffee, hot chocolate, tea and coke, etc. World cuisine snacks are also served e.g. Italian Affogato, Mexican Nachos and Japanese Savoury Rice Crackers to let students feel at ease while being actively social in the environment.

ENGLISH COOKERY WORKSHOP

If you need to beef up your culinary skills then head to WCB. The English Club and PTA hosted a personalised “Cookery Workshop” for WCBSS parents and students. Parents and their children were instructed, guided and taught English terminology regarding cooking during the workshop in English by various English Teachers. This allowed the participants to overcome the language barrier. The parents and children were high in spirits and collaborated to create a Christmas winter masterpiece “Gingerbread Man” delicacy. The participants mastered and lovingly showed off their culinary artistic skills by beautifully mixing the ingredients and decorating the snacks which made it very visually appealing and edible. All the participants passed with flying colours.

SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING OPEN CLASS

The Self-Directed Learning (SDL) lesson based on creative sports were observed by EDB distinguished officers, principal, vice principals, subject panels and senior teachers from other primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong. The junior form English lesson was co-taught by a NET and an English Teacher. A learning strategy that allows learners to take charge of their own learning process (diagnosis learning needs, identify learning goals, select learning strategies, and evaluate learning performances and outcomes) and helps them meet their goals. The objective of the open class was to distinguish general vs creative sports using their iPad tablet, having a group discussion among students in a group setting to device a new creative sports club which would attain a high attendance and favor the joy of sports by using sports equipment and various hobby motion actions to create a new sport. Students in groups presented about the means of their creative sport and demonstrated with actions to show how it is played e.g. dancing football. It was then followed by a live online poll survey among the audience to illustrate and choose the most attractive and entertaining new sport. All these Self-Directed lesson activities led to a great satisfaction of experiencing creativity among both the students and audience.

INTER-SCHOOL READING ALOUD COMPETITION

The English and Chinese department jointly hosted the Inter-school Reading Aloud Competition for the Primary school students at our school. The objective of the competition was to encourage students to appreciate English Literature by exposing students to literary texts e.g. prose. It helps to enhance student’s knowledge in English and the western culture. The competition helped to strengthen fluency, language skills and develop competency to be eloquent in the English language. The participants read outstandingly and gave compelling performances with appropriate voice projection, tone and animated expressions with their vibrant personalities. The Adjudicators from both the departments scored and ranked students either as 1st, 2nd or 3rd with certificates being presented to all the deserving winning candidates followed by valuable advice regarding their performances on further enhancing their English skills.
